Fix Codex “GitUnavailableError” on Mac

Codex suddenly failing tasks or automations with:

GitUnavailableError

Git may actually be installed. On macOS, the problem can be that the Xcode licence hasn’t been accepted. A recent Codex report traced repeated automation failures to exactly this. (GitHub)

Check Git

Open Terminal and run:

git --version

If you get an Xcode licence error instead of the Git version, run:

sudo xcodebuild -license

Read through and accept the licence.

Then check again:

git --version

You should now get something like:

git version 2.x

Restart Codex

Completely quit Codex and reopen it.

This bit matters. In the reported case Git worked again after accepting the licence, but Codex continued reporting Git as unavailable until the app was restarted. (GitHub)

Retry the failed task or automation.

So if Codex claims Git is unavailable, check Git from Terminal before reinstalling anything. The Xcode licence may be all that’s stopping it.
